The Tongue - Edition #15: Ignorant Talk

April 19th, 2006

Wow, what a day it has been. What a week it has been, really. It’s been a little stressful, to say the least, to see what my friends are going through with the IRS. Call it God or coincidence that the scripture I looked at today actually deals with that situation.

The Tongue – Edition #15: Ignorant Talk

1st Peter 2:13-17
Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.

I did find it interesting how the government helps the big companies and doesn’t help the little businesses, which founded this country and make it the great country it is today. I’m not mad at them for what they are doing. I simply see it as the ways of the world. It is written to give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and that is money. Money, money, money… you can live without it, but it does make life a little less fun. Or so they say. God doesn’t have to bless me with money. He doesn’t have to bless anyone with anything, but he does it because of love. And as what was experienced by Job, it can be taken away just as quickly as it is given. The only thing that can’t be taken away is the love for God. The only person who can take that away is me. I can choose to withhold love from God, my wife, my son, and anyone else I choose.

Ignorant (adj.):

  1. Lacking education or knowledge.

  2. Showing or arising from a lack of education or knowledge.

  3. Unaware or uninformed.

Now, I need to do good, so that I can silence the foolish men. I have spoken of the Yahoo group that is full of atheists that I visit on a now rare basis. I think I am simply going to stop visiting them all together. I am not sure, but that is what I am leaning to.

Foolish (adj.):
  1. Lacking or exhibiting a lack of good sense or judgment; silly.

  2. Resulting from stupidity or misinformation; unwise.

  3. Arousing laughter; absurd or ridiculous.

  4. Immoderate or stubborn; unreasonable.

  5. Embarrassed; abashed.

  6. Insignificant; trivial.

I can say that group is stubborn and unreasonable. And with that in mind, Luke 9 comes to mind.

Luke 9:1-5
When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra tunic. Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. If people do not welcome you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave their town, as a testimony against them.”

Maybe it is time to dust off my feet and move on from them. But, going back to the tongue, righteous talk and righteous actions silence ignorant talk and foolish men. Word choice is always for a Christian. Being a math nerd, I struggle with word choice. I could have the same demeanor as Moses… let me bring my Aaron with me, for I can’t talk right. When this study is complete, (I have to look through another 1,452 scriptures to get there – and that’s another 4 years worth, should I do one scripture a day), I will, by the grace of God, be able to have so much better control over my tongue. Have a wondrous Wednesday, and I will catch you all again tomorrow.
