Salvation Saliva

I'm just being open right now: I don't really want to have a Quiet Time today. I am going to... since I am already typing, it makes it a whole bunch easier. I got to sleep in today, WHAT A BLESSING! God has already blessed me this morning. I got to sleep in, I got to wake up even, and I have a son who is super cool. Of course, now I have to get into my job search. I gotta getta job.
Ephesians 2:4-9
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.

2nd Thesalonians 2:7-15
For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming. The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness. But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.

1st Timothy 2:15
But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.

So, with these three scriptures I can see that salvation is:
  • Consists of love, faith, and being holy.
  • Consists of loving the truth.
  • Consists of grace and faith (and not by works).

This is just a nugget day. My son is demanding a great deal of attention... so I am going to bid thee fairwell... Johnny Out.

Saving for a Rainy Day

Today, since there was church and a class and a birthday party, I will just post the scriptures and come back tomorrow and comment on those and maybe add a few more.

The Way of the Saved

A continuation of the Salvation Study, I am revisiting the last six scriptures that I have posted the past couple of days. I did a search of the word "salvation" and came up with 120 scriptures in the NIV Bible. I honestly didn't think it would be that high. In fact, I thought it would be about 20 scriptures at most.Luke 6:6-9
On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Get up and stand in front of everyone." So he got up and stood there. Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?"
  • To save life on the sabbath day was agreeable to their own canons: there were many things which they allowed might be done on the sabbath day, when life was in danger, which otherwise were not lawful.
  • The Vulgate Latin, Syriac, Arabic, and Persic versions read, or "to destroy", To do evil, kill, or destroy, are not lawful at any time; and to do good, and to save life, must be right at all times: our Lord has a particular view to the Scribes and Pharisees, and the question is put home to their own consciences; whose hearts and thoughts, designs and views, were all open to Christ; and who were now watching to do evil to him, and even to destroy and take away his life: for the violation of the sabbath was death by the law, and this was what they sought to accuse him of: now he puts the question to them, and makes them judges which must appear most right and just in the sight of God and men, for him to heal this poor man of his withered hand, though on the sabbath day; which would be doing a good and beneficent action to him, whereby his life would be saved, and preserved with comfort and usefulness, and he would be in a capacity of getting his livelihood; or for them to cherish an evil intention against him, to seek to bring mischief on him; and not only destroy his character and usefulness as much as in them lay, but even take away his very life also: he leaves it with them to consider of which was most agreeable to the law of God, the nature of a sabbath, and the good of mankind.

Acts 2:36-41
"Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call." With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

Corrupt: skolios (pronounced: skol-ee-os'):

  • Warped, that is, winding; figuratively perverse: - crooked, froward, untoward.
  • Crooked, curved; metaphorically; perverse, wicked; unfair, surly, froward.

Repent: metanoeō (pronounced: met-an-o-eh'-o):

  • To think differently or afterwards, that is, reconsider (morally to feel compunction): - repent.
  • To change one’s mind, i.e. to repent; to change one’s mind for better, heartily to amend with abhorrence of one’s past sins.

Forgiveness: aphesis (pronounced: af'-es-is):

  • Freedom; (figuratively) pardon: - deliverance, forgiveness, liberty, remission.
  • Release from bondage or imprisonment; forgiveness or pardon, of sins (letting them go as if they had never been committed), remission of the penalty.
John 12:42-50
Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved praise from men more than praise from God. Then Jesus cried out, "When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness." As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day. For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say."

Light: phōs (pronounced: foce):
  • A heavenly light such as surrounds angels when they appear on earth; metaphorically, God is light because light has the extremely delicate, subtle, pure, brilliant quality, of truth and its knowledge, together with the spiritual purity associated with it, that which is exposed to the view of all, openly, publicly, reason, mind; the power of understanding especially moral and spiritual truth.
  • (To shine or make manifest, especially by rays; luminousness (in the widest application, natural or artificial, abstract or concrete, literal or figurative): - fire, light.

Darkness: skotia (pronounced: skot-ee'-ah):

  • Dimness, obscurity (literally or figuratively): - dark (-ness).
  • Darkness; the darkness due to want of light; metaphorically used of ignorance of divine things, and its associated wickedness, and the resultant misery in hell.

God's elect themselves, whilst in a state of unregeneracy and unbelief, are in darkness; when Christ shines in upon them, and infuses the light of faith into them, they are no longer in darkness; the darkness is past, at least in a great measure, and the true light shines; in which they see light, see glory and grace of Christ, and the invisible realities of another world: nor do they continue in the darkness of sin, ignorance, and unbelief; but walk in the light of truth, faith, and holiness, until the perfect day comes, when all the shadows of remaining darkness will flee away.

Mark 8:34-38
Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels."

Follow: akoloutheō (pronounced: ak-ol-oo-theh'-o):

  • Properly to be in the same way with, that is, to accompany (specifically as a disciple): - follow, reach.
  • To follow one who precedes, join him as his attendant, accompany him; to join one as a disciple, become or be his disciple; side with his party.

Gospel: euaggelion (pronounced: yoo-ang-ghel'-ee-on):

  • A good message, that is, the gospel: - gospel.
  • A reward for good tidings; good tidings; the glad tidings of the kingdom of God soon to be set up, and subsequently also of Jesus the Messiah, the founder of this kingdom. After the death of Christ, the term comprises also the preaching of (concerning) Jesus Christ as having suffered death on the cross to procure eternal salvation for the men in the kingdom of God, but as restored to life and exalted to the right hand of God in heaven, thence to return in majesty to consummate the kingdom of God; the glad tidings of salvation through Christ; the proclamation of the grace of God manifest and pledged in Christ; the gospel; as the messianic rank of Jesus was proved by his words, his deeds, and his death, the narrative of the sayings, deeds, and death of Jesus Christ came to be called the gospel or glad tidings.

Luke 9:23-26
Then he said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self? If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

See above...

John 3:16-21
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."

Eternal: aiōnios (pronounced: ahee-o'-nee-os):
  • Perpetual (also used of past time, or past and future as well): - eternal, for ever, everlasting, world (began).
  • Without beginning and end, that which always has been and always will be; without beginning; without end, never to cease, everlasting.

Believes: pisteuō (pronounced: pist-yoo'-o):

  • To think to be true, to be persuaded of, to credit, place confidence in; of the thing believed; to credit, have confidence; in a moral or religious reference; used in the NT of the conviction and trust to which a man is impelled by a certain inner and higher prerogative and law of soul; to trust in Jesus or God as able to aid either in obtaining or in doing something: saving faith; to entrust a thing to one, i.e. his fidelity; to be intrusted with a thing.
  • To have faith (in, upon, or with respect to, a person or thing), that is, credit; by implication to entrust (especially one’s spiritual well being to Christ): - believe (-r), commit (to trust), put in trust with.

Evil: ponēros (pronounced: pon-ay-ros'):

  • Hurtful, that is, evil (properly in effect or influence), figuratively calamitous; also (passively) ill, that is, diseased; but especially (morally) culpable, that is, derelict, vicious, facinorous; neuter (singular) mischief, malice, or (plural) guilt; masculine (singular) the devil, or (plural) sinners: - bad, evil, grievous, harm, lewd, malicious, wicked (wickedness).
  • Full of labours, annoyances, hardships; pressed and harassed by labours; bringing toils, annoyances, perils; of a time full of peril to Christian faith and steadfastness; causing pain and trouble; bad, of a bad nature or condition; in a physical sense: diseased or blind; in an ethical sense: evil wicked, bad.

Hates: miseō (pronounced: mis-eh'-o):

  • To detest (especially to persecute); by extension to love less: - hate (hateful).
  • To hate, pursue with hatred, detest; to be hated, detested.

It seems like yesterday that I did the #600 post. Now, I have the #650 coming up. Today is the #646 post. Four more to complete #650.

I think it is a great study thus far... I want to place some more comments on this, but I want to let it swirl around in my head for a minute. I think I will post all the notes and add some comments in a day or so. Johnny Out.

Somebody Save Me

Today, I am looking at the scriptures I found yesterday. What is salvation? Well, it is the state of being saved. Or maybe it is the process of being saved. Let's see what good ol' Webster has to say about it.
Salvation (noun):
  • The act of saving or protecting from harm, risk, loss, destruction, etc.
  • The state of being saved or protected from harm, risk, etc.
  • A source, cause, or means of being saved or protected from harm, risk, etc.
  • Deliverance from the power and penalty of sin; redemption.
Matthew 1:20-21
But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
  • Jesus will save people from their sins.

Save: sōzō (pronounced: sode'-zo):

  • To save, that is, deliver or protect (literally or figuratively): - heal, preserve, save (self), do well, be (make) whole.
  • To save, keep safe and sound, to rescue from danger or destruction; one (from injury or peril); to save a suffering one (from perishing), i.e. one suffering from disease, to make well, heal, restore to health; to preserve one who is in danger of destruction, to save or rescue; to save in the technical biblical sense; negatively; to deliver from the penalties of the Messianic judgment; to save from the evils which obstruct the reception of the Messianic deliverance.

Matthew 16:24-25
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it."

  • The same save used in Matthew 1 and 16 are the same in teh Greek. I have to DENY myself to be saved. I have to take up my cross. I have to follow Christ. These are essential for salvation. That is what the scripture says.

Deny: aparneomai (pronounced: ap-ar-neh'-om-ahee):

  • To deny utterly, that is, disown, abstain: - deny.
  • To deny; to affirm that one has no acquaintance or connection with someone; to forget one’s self, lose sight of one’s self and one’s own interests.

What would it look like if I "disowned" myself? What would it look like if I abstained from the things I wanted to do so that I could help others? What if I focused on the interest of others and not my own interests? YOWZAH! Tough, but that is what God wants.

Mark 3:1-5
Another time he went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Stand up in front of everyone." Then Jesus asked them, "Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?" But they remained silent. He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored.

There is never a BAD time to do a good thing. Even if it means I have to stop somewhere on the way to church to help someone, that is what God wants: a heart to do a good thing, the right thing, a loving thing at all times.

Luke 19:7-10
All the people saw this and began to mutter, "He has gone to be the guest of a 'sinner.'" But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount." Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."

In Matthew 1:20-21, I learned that Jesus came to save people from their sins. In Luke 19, I learn that Jesus came to seek and save the lost.

Seek: zēteō (pronounced: dzay-teh'-o):
  • Of uncertain affinity; to seek (literally or figuratively); specifically (by Hebraism) to worship (God), or (in a bad sense) to plot (against life): - be (go) about, desire, endeavour, enquire (for), require, (X will) seek (after, for, means).
  • To seek in order to find; to seek a thing; to seek [in order to find out] by thinking, meditating, reasoning, to enquire into; to seek after, seek for, aim at, strive after; to seek, i.e. require, demand; to crave, demand something from someone.

I like how "seek" can mean to worship. Helping someone find God? That is a form of worship. Seeking a place to pray? That is a form of worship. Just the process is a form of worship. That's amazing to think about...

Luke 6:6-9
On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Get up and stand in front of everyone." So he got up and stood there. Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?"

John 3:16-21
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Six more passages to check out before I move forward... I still have a couple of other studies I haven't even knocked down. Tomorrow, I will only post the scriptures that I have done, probably the six and not repost the other passages. But I will review the points from those passages. Johnny Out.

Salvation Study: So What Saves?

This is the first posting I have done on Salvation: Remember When.... This series I am starting (restarting) is in reference to a post I did during the "Fruits Study - Faithfulness" in which I commented on what the Bible talks about what saves. This is dedicated to finding all the things that encompass salvation.
Different churches have different ideas of what saves. For some, it is simply belief and that is it. Others believe it is constant attendance, whether it be Sunday and Wednesday, or just Sunday... still others believe it is baptism, love, or faith. If salvation is one of these things, which one? How is one idea of salvation in one church the right one and another church the wrong one?
Well, for one thing, no one became saved without having a dialogue with God. Now, you can't call God on your cell phone and you can't mail him a letter, but you can reach with a prayer-phone. You read the Bible and you pray. This is essential for a relationship with God. That's what happened when the curtain was torn as Jesus died on the cross. You don't need to communicate with a priest to have a relationship with God. In a sense, it becomes a "me and God" relationship. But is that it?
Matthew 1:20-21
But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. Now, if you know anything about my wife... you know she can relate is a seriously strange way to this comic (Sunday's BC). In fact, she would have made that scream with just the one spider on her...

Now, tomorrow I will go back over these scriptures and give my thoughts. This is really cool. Johnny Out.

Wow... nine pictures. And, it is like looking at the future. Comics from this coming Sunday paper. How is THAT for service? Also, there are a TON of scriptures on salvation... these are just a few. There are going to be a number of parts to this series.

Marriage Enrichment Weekend 2008: Part IV

This is another continuation on this series. The previous edition was on Monday.
Proverbs 18:21-22
The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the LORD.

So, when I read this, I was mostly interested in the past "those who love it will eat its fruit." But then I got in the e-Sword and was attracted to the word "power".

Power: yâd (pronounced: yawd):
  • hand (of man); strength, power (figuratively); side (of land), part, portion (metaphorically) (figuratively); (various special, technical senses); sign, monument; part, fractional part, share; time, repetition; axle-trees, axle; stays, support (for laver); tenons (in tabernacle); a phallus, a hand (meaning unsure); wrists
James 1:26
If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.

and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue; but boasts of his works, and speaks ill of his brethren; backbites them, and hurts their names and characters, by private insinuations, and public charges without any foundation; who takes no care of what he says, but gives his tongue a liberty of speaking anything, to the injury of others, and the dishonour of God, and his ways: there seems to be an allusion to Psalm 39:1 (below).

Psalm 39:1
I said, "I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my presence."

1st Peter 3:1-7
Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.

Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

And treat them with respect; by speaking well of her, and respectfully to her, and by deeds as well as words; not only by clothing her in a decent and becoming manner, suitable to her station; but by providing everything honest and comely for her, food and raiment, a suitable maintenance, all the necessaries, conveniences, and delights of life, that are laudable and proper; in which sense the word honour is used in 1st Timothy 5:3 (below) and this was agreeably to the doctrine of the Jews...

1st Timothy 5:3
Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need.

Proverbs 18:2
A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinions.

A fool hath no delight in understanding,.... In natural understanding, and in the improvement of his mind in it; he delights not in books, nor in the conversation of men of learning and sense: or in spiritual understanding, in the understanding of spiritual things; these are foolishness to a natural man; nor does he delight in reading the Scriptures, nor in hearing the word, and attendance on it in the house of God, but is weary of such exercises.

But that his heart may discover itself; and the folly that is in it: such men only desire to have some knowledge and understanding, to make a show of it, that they may be thought to be wise, and to be capable of talking of things as if they understood them, when it is only to the exposing of themselves and their ignorance; some persons attain to no more learning and knowledge than just to be capable to show that they are fools. Or, "but in the discovery of his heart"; he delights in discovering that; not the wisdom, but the folly that is in it. (This is from a commentary).

Proverbs 16:24
Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

Health (above: healing):
  • helth: Shālōm is part of the formal salutation still common in Palestine. In this sense it is used in Genesis 43:28; 2nd Samuel 20:9; the stem word means "peace," and is used in many varieties of expression relating to security, success and good bodily health. Yeshū‛āh, which specifically means deliverance or help, occurs in the refrain of Psalm 42:11; Psalm 43:5, as well as in Psalm 67:2; in the American Standard Revised Version it is rendered "help." Riph'ūth is literally, "healing," and is found only in Proverbs 3:8. Marpē' also means healing of the body, but is used in a figurative sense as of promoting soundness of mind and moral character in Proverbs 4:22; Proverbs 12:18; Proverbs 13:17; Proverbs 16:24, as also in Jeremiah 8:15, where the Revised Version (British and American) renders it "healing." 'Ǎrūkhāh is also used in the same figurative sense in Isaiah 58:8; Jeremiah 8:22; Jeremiah 30:17; Jeremiah 33:6; literally means "repairing or restoring"; it is the word used of the repair of the wall of Jerusalem by Nehemiah (chapter 4).
  • The word "health" occurs twice in the New Testament: in Paul's appeal to his shipmates to take food (Acts 27:34), he says it is for their sotēria, literally, "safety"; so the American Standard Revised Version, the King James Version "health." The verb hugianinō is used in 3rd John 1:2, in the apostle's salutation to Gaius.

I found this to be useful. Marpē' also means healing of the body, but is used in a figurative sense as of promoting soundness of mind and moral character.

I haven't ever used a commentary so much as how I have used it today. It is the "Gill" commentary, available for free at e-Sword. I have found it to be very inciteful and helpful. Anyway, Johnny Out.

IQ Test - Wisdom vs. Intellegence

Congratulations, Johnny!

Your IQ score is 133

This number is based on a scientific formula that compares how many questions you answered correctly on the Classic IQ Test relative to others.

Your Intellectual Type is Visual Mathematician. This means you are gifted at spotting patterns — both in pictures and in numbers. These talents combined with your overall high intelligence make you good at understanding the big picture, which is why people trust your instincts and turn to you for direction — especially in the workplace. And that's just some of what we know about you from your test results.
So, what does this mean? It depends on who you ask. Personally, I think it means BANANAS. In other words, I may have a high IQ, but I really do not feel at all smart or nigh-genius. But still, I felt that since it is my birthday today, that I should focus a little on what the Bible says about smart people... This should be interesting.

1st Corinthians 1:20-30
Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength.

Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised thingsand the things that are notto nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.

Matthew 5:3-12
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you."

1st Corinthians 4:8-13
Already you have all you want! Already you have become rich! You have become kings—and that without us! How I wish that you really had become kings so that we might be kings with you! For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like men condemned to die in the arena. We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to men. We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, we are dishonored! To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; when we are slandered, we answer kindly. Up to this moment we have become the scum of the earth, the refuse of the world.

I could go on with 1st Corinthians 8, but maybe I will have a second edition or third or whatever and I can use that in the study. So, the what the study means, at least today, is that intellegence doesn't mean that you are close to God. In fact, the more you know, the more likely you go (as in your heart slips away from God and you lean on your own understanding). And that is the point today. Intellegence and wisdom are not the same, but wisdom comes from a certain understanding and a certain intellegence, all provided by God that he freely gives to those he chooses. Yeah, I think I am going to continue this study at a later date. But for now, my son desires my attention and I will freely give it to him. Johnny Out.

Marriage Enrichment Weekend 2008: Part III

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter. I saw a church that had a sign which said they had a "31 minute" Easter service. It's like they were trying to say that you don't have spend too much time with God but you can still punch you "Church Clock" on Easter. The Bible says something about itching ears... Anyway, today is the third enstallment of the MEW 2008.
Genesis 1:26-27
Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

I like how God said "us" and "our" in this passage. And then it says in "his own image". So, God is a plural and singular being at the same time.

Genesis 2:18-20
The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."

Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.

Helper: ‛êzer (pronounced: ay'-zer)
  • aid: - help.
  • help, succour; one who helps

Helpmate: neged (pronounced: neh'-ghed)

  • A front, that is, part opposite; specifically a counterpart, or mate; usually (adverbially, especially with preposition) over against or before: - about, (over) against, X aloof, X far (off), X from, over, presence, X other side, sight, X to view.
  • What is conspicuous, what is in front of (substantive); In front of, straight forward, before, in sight of (adverb); in front of oneself, straightforward (adverb); before your face, in your view or purpose (adverb); what is in front of, corresponding to (with preposition); in front of, before (with preposition); in the sight or presence of (with preposition); parallel to (with preposition); over, for (with preposition); in front, opposite (with preposition); at a distance (with preposition); from the front of, away from (preposition); from before the eyes of, opposite to, at a distance from; from before, in front of; as far as the front of.
Pslam 54:4
Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me.
I don't really need to comment on this one.

Ephesians 5:19-33
Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church— for we are members of his body. "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Submit: hupotassō (pronounced: hoop-ot-as'-so)
  • To subordinate; reflexively to obey: - be under obedience (obedient), put under, subdue unto, (be, make) subject (to, unto), be (put) in subjection (to, under), submit self unto.
  • To arrange under, to subordinate; to subject, put in subjection; to subject one’s self, obey; to submit to one’s control; to yield to one’s admonition or advice; to obey, be subject
2nd Corinthians 5:16-21
So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Reconcile (verb):
  • To reestablish a close relationship between.
  • To settle or resolve.
  • To bring (oneself) to accept.
  • To make compatible or consistent.
  • Come to terms.
  • To cause (people) to become friendly again, such as after they have quarrelled.
  • To restore to harmony.

Proverbs 18:21-22
The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the LORD.

James 1:26
If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.

OK, so I will continue this on March 26th... Tomorrow is my birthday and I am planning a different QT for tomorrow. Johnny Out.

The Easter Bunny

Happy Easter. I am going to do the final edition of the Marriage Enrichment notes tomorrow. Since today is Easter, I felt I should do something with an "Easterish" theme.
So here's a picture of some bunny rabbits... all thrown together... I guess I should have put some eggs in there or something. Oh well... I don't understand the Easter Bunny anyway. How does a rabbit litter a whole bunch of lawns have anything to do with the resurrection of Jesus Christ?

So anyway, today's topic...

Matthew 28:1-10
After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you."

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me."

Luke 24:1-12
On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.' " Then they remembered his words.

When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.

Mark 16:1-20
When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, "Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?"

But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.

"Don't be alarmed," he said. "You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.' "

Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.

When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. She went and told those who had been with him and who were mourning and weeping. When they heard that Jesus was alive and that she had seen him, they did not believe it.

Afterward Jesus appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking in the country. These returned and reported it to the rest; but they did not believe them either.

Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen.

He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well."

After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.

Risen: egeirō (pronounced: eg-i'-ro)

  • To waken (transitively or intransitively), that is, rouse (literally from sleep, from sitting or lying, from disease, from death; or figuratively from obscurity, inactivity, ruins, nonexistence): awake, lift (up), raise (again, up), rear up, (a-) rise (again, up), stand, take up.
  • To arouse, cause to rise; to arouse from sleep, to awake; to arouse from the sleep of death, to recall the dead to life; to cause to rise from a seat or bed etc.; to raise up, produce, cause to appear; to cause to appear, bring before the public; to raise up, stir up, against one; to raise up, i.e. cause to be born; of buildings, to raise up, construct, erect

I don't know... the different stories kind of bring the story to life... not that it wasn't already a great account from one person or another, but all three really bring it together. Anyway, I hope you have had a great Easter. Johnny Out.

You know what is cool is that the scriptures I used today (I put them in this morning before I went to church)... so I guess that is great how the Spirit used my QT to prepare me for church.

Marriage Enrichment Weekend 2008: Part II

This is a three-parter. Today is the second part... tomorrow will be the third. And hopefully I will be moving on to other things to study after that. My birthday is Tuesday... so I will do something for that day, maybe a little different than normal... Anyway, today is the scriptures listed. Tomorrow will be the nuggets.

Pslam 54:4
Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me.

Ephesians 5:19-33

Proverbs 16:24
